Wind & Weather Conditions: The wind is usually calm throughout the morning, but it air temperatures range between the 70s and 80s during the day. Paddling first thing as the sun rises may be a bit nippy. You may want to wait until the sun has risen over the mountain peaks before you begin paddling or wear layered clothing until the air temperature

warms up. Grant Lake is closed in the winter due to the abundance of snow.

Terrain: The northern end of Grant Lake is a wide, open body of water encircled by rolling brush-covered hills with no trees whereas the middle eastern side has enormous mountain peaks overlooking the lake with tall pine trees hugging the shoreline.

Kayak Fishing: Grant Lake is planted yearly with 60,000 10 to 12 inch rainbow trout, and 7,0000 brown trout yearly by the Department of Fish and Game and Alper’s Ranch hatcheries. There are also a few brook and cutthroat trout. A drawback about Grant Lake is, it is a catch and release fishery. Violators may find themselves with a pricey ticket from the California Department of Fish and Game if they forget to let them go.

Paddle Notes: Grant Lake, the largest lake in the June Lake Loop, has an entirely different topography than the other three lakes along Highway 158. The landscape changes dramatically between the northern and southern ends of the lake. There’s a striking difference between the two. The southern half is my preference of the two. It has the appearance of a lush dense tall pine forest, whereas the northern half is more open and barren. Grant Lake has a minimal amount of boat traffic and is often deserted, unless there is a fishing contest.
