Paddle Notes: Nestled high in the mountains at about 8200’ feet elevations lies this superb paddling destination, with scenery so dramatic it will be etched in your memory for a lifetime. Woods Lake was beautiful to behold. Dazzling reflective images on the water’s surface of the majestic mountains and towering stands of ponderosa pines can be seen at the break of day. The gorgeous surrounding scenery and shaded campsite setting easily put it on the Top Twenty List. A more stunningly beautiful paddling destination can scarcely be imagined. It’s a shame the lake is so small. This tiny alpine lake with its rocky shoreline and steep massive mountain jutting up from the shore provides photographic opportunities and a quiet solitude while drifting on its peaceful waters fishing the afternoon away.

Wind & Weather Conditions: Woods Lake is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range and offers paddling opportunities during the summertime only due to the heavy snowfall beginning in early fall and continuing through late spring. The air temperature in the early morning and at night can drop into the late 30s and 40s during the summer, but the daytime high air temperature averages about 75 degrees.

Kayak Fishing: There’s no question the scenery is one thousand times better than the fishing at Woods Lake but there is fairly good action for catching rainbow trout in the 10 to 12 inch class which 2,500 are planted yearly. Visitors

enjoy kayaking and canoeing, camping, fishing, and hiking at Woods Lake.

Terrain: Massive granite boulders poke out from the water’s surface providing intriguing views like you’ve never seen before. Twenty-five tent sites interspersed beneath tall ponderosa pines and firs in a thickly wooded area are available on a first-come, first- come, first-served basis. I’d consider Woods Lake more of a pond than a lake, but either way, you don’t want to pass by it without at least stopping to view its outstanding beauty. Try to plan your arrival time at the break of day to capture the gorgeous sunrise reflective images on the lake’s water surface.

Open: The lake and campground are open seven days a week from June to October, weather permitting. Boats with motors are not allowed.

Fees: There is a fee to camp and for pets, but no day use or launch fee.

Directions: From the town of Meyers, take Highway 89 south twelve miles to Highway 88. Drive about nine-and-a-half miles on Highway 88 to Woods Lake Road turn-off and turn left. (Woods Lake is about three-and-a-half miles west of Red Lake.) Drive one mile south to the campground on the right. RVs and trailers are not advised to drive on Woods Lake Road.
